My father was one of a kind! He lived life to the fullest! He loved his family and friends like no other! His admiration for his his colleagues and his fellow coaches was truly genuine. His runners … were part of his legacy and brought him true happiness.. I will miss his smile, his laugh, his honesty, the way he looked at my mom and his grandchildren. I will miss his wittiness, his stories and his wicked sense of humor. More than anything … I will miss our talks, our visits … just him.

He was one the first people I saw when I came into this world and I was the last before he left this world. I am honored beyond words and will cherish that moment until we meet again.

Our sincerest condolences to Bruce’s family. He was a good guy and a great coach. Competing against his teams was always a challenge. He was among the giants of Ohio coaches.

Bruce and his Brecksville Bees were our arch rivals and he came to be my best friend in coaching. He knew how to help young people grow into productive adults. He made a difference in their lives and in mine as we shared ideas together. Our teams , even as we both wanted to win, respected each other. When it came to the State meets we cheered for each other. He was my friend, he will be dearly missed, yet remembered by so many especially me. Bruce thank you for all you did for the sport and for me.

My condolences to Sue and the entire Lerch family. As a new young coach, I was so lucky to be able to observe and learn from the master! Bruce was not only someone I looked up to, but a friend as well. A legend, I miss him!

My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Bruce. I knew Bruce through coaching XC and track. I’d be hard pressed to think of another coach who epitomized all the positive aspects of a role model. Bruce and I had a little ritual at the State XC meet where as soon as we saw each other we’d shake hands and say, “hey, isn’t it amazing we fooled them again and here we are!” That was about as boastful as Bruce could be. We never viewed ourselves as competitors but as colleagues. The man was devoid of ego and all of his efforts were 100% for the kid’s benefit. Even though Bruce compiled Hall of Fame accomplishments he was consistently humble and gracious. It was never about him. Bruce was even keeled and steady as a rock. I am saddened by the new of Bruce’s passing but am grateful for knowing such a great man. I am richer for the experiences I shared with Bruce. I am certain that there are countless people who feel the same way. May God bless Bruce’s soul. He was one of a kind. The best kind!

I was privileged to know Bruce while he was at Kemper. He was humble, funny, reflective and kind. He talked often about his love for his wife. My heart goes out to those who loved him in his life and will feel his absence most deeply.

I worked with Bruce at Brecksville- Broadview Hts High School for many, many years. He was a fun-loving guy, a very good teacher and an OUTSTANDING cross country coach. We were all worried for his health concerns when he left us. But through the grace of God, Bruce recovered and, from reading the obituary, he had a second chance and a loving and meaningful long life with his family.
