Early in my coaching and teaching career at BW I heard a lot about a teacher/coach at Roehm by the name of Ed Hrivnak, who had been an outstanding basketball player and track athlete at BW. This was in the mid '60s and my leaders like Lee Tressel and Sparky Adams shared the stories and their pride in ED as a graduate of BW. As time went by, I had some chances to meet Ed at BW athletic and alumni events. He was always friendly and kind, seeking information on how we were doing with no hint of how special he had been when on campus. During my 40 some years at BW, I would run into Ed in town or on campus, and he always treated me and those with me as his friends. Thank You, Ed for being my friend.

I loved chatting with Ed between services at St Paul. Ed was always upbeat and always had something interesting on his mind that he was more than willing to share. It seems like he always had a book or an idea of the day for me to talk about. I didn't know Ed well, but I never doubted his caring nature and his lust for life. A truly good-hearted man.

Always good to the new neighbor, Ed shared stories of our street from the day we moved in next door in 1986. A Berea institution, Ed was remembered by loads of former students. RIP Ed.

Where do I start! My first encounter with Mr. Hrivnak was at his front door as I came to collect for the Berea News Sun. You can imagine this little elementary school kid looking up to this larger than laugh man, I was kind of scared. I think he gave me a hard time about how much he owed me which made me more scared but as I learned later he just did that in fun. He had that dry sense of humor. Into Junior High it was nice to see a familiar face and like everyone else has said, he treated everyone the same.I played basketball and always wondered why he didn't coach us in Junior High. Later in life I would see him at McDonald's and he walked everyday past our house on Edgewood Dr. He along with Rex Jarvis were role models for me as I then went into education and coaching. Spent 35 years in the profession and thanks to all my teachers in the Berea System, I had a great career. R.I.P. Mr. Hrivnak and tell all those BW players you are ready for a game.

Aunt Gail, I just learned today. I enjoyed my Uncle Ed over the many years he was part of the family. He had a great memory for every corny junior high school joke. I was impressed by his skill playing the accordion - just name a song and he could play it from memory. I remember watching him play fast-pitch softball once and he was the dominant pitcher even though basketball was his sport. I sent a letter to you a few days ago but it was before I leaned of his passing. Our thoughts are with you.
