Doris Jean Yates

Doris Jean Yates, aged 94, of Carlsbad, California, passed away on December 19, 2021 in Akron, Ohio. She was born in 1927 in Buhl, Idaho to the late Charles F. and Mable (nee Hawkins) McClain. Beloved wife of William Osborne Yates, Jr (deceased); loving mother of William Osborne Yates, III (Andreas Dirnagl) and Charles McClain Yates (Kristen); cherished grandmother of Kacey Yates-Gable (Eliot), Mason (Jessica), and William, IV (Kate); and treasured great-grandmother of Dean, Victoria, and Frieda. Doris lived a full, rich life. She started her college career in Ashland, Oregon as a young mother. After earning her BA from the University of Washington, she started a 30+ year career as a teacher of second and third graders, many of whom stayed in touch with her. While teaching in the Fullerton, California School District she was named Teacher of the Year. She loved to read and passed that love along to hundreds of children. She also enjoyed dancing with her husband, Bill. Early in their relationship they were asked to leave the dance floor for jitterbugging too closely together. Her love of singing led to radio appearances as a child and she sang in the choir of Trinity Episcopal Church in Ashland, Oregon where she also was a soprano in the Messiah chorale. She was a member of Eastern Star and other civic organizations. A longtime Episcopalian, Doris was an active parishioner of St. Michael’s-by-the-Sea in Carlsbad, California and served until recently as treasurer of All Saints Cemetary in San Luis Rey (Oceanside, CA). With a keen mind and intellectual curiosity, Doris was always eager to get to know places and people she read about. Her travels took her to Iceland, Japan, China, and the British Isles, among other places. A joyful memorial service will be held at a later date.
