Alfred Thurer's Obituary
Alfred Thurer, of Lakewood, Ohio, passed away peacefully just five months shy of his 100th birthday. He was born on November 14, 1926, in Chur, Switzerland, and lived a remarkable life marked by hard work, adventure, friendship, and devotion to family.
Raised on a farm in the Swiss Alps, Alfred chose a different path than agriculture, learning the skilled trade of tool and die making. His talent and determination led him first to Sweden, where he began his career, and later to Canada, where he continued working in his chosen profession.
While living in Canada, Alfred met the love of his life, Jeanne Freymond, an immigrant from Yverdon, Switzerland, in the French-speaking region of the country. Although Alfred came from the German-speaking area of Switzerland, the two shared a deep connection and built a life together that spanned 67 years of marriage.
Together, Alfred and Jeanne immigrated to the United States and settled in Lakewood, Ohio. Alfred worked for Triad Metal Products in Cleveland before becoming an American citizen in 1959. That same year, he fulfilled an entrepreneurial dream by helping to found Die & Manufacturing with business partners. Alfred remained committed to the business until his retirement.
Alfred and Jeanne shared a passion for travel and spent many years exploring the world. Their adventures took them throughout Europe and to destinations across the globe, including numerous memorable cruises. They also enjoyed an active social life and cherished a wide circle of friends. Alfred was a proud member of Schlaraffia, while Jeanne was active in a variety of clubs and organizations.
Following retirement, Alfred and Jeanne made their home at the Renaissance retirement community, where they continued to enjoy friendships and the life they had built together.
Alfred will be remembered for his strong work ethic, craftsmanship, adventurous spirit, loyalty to friends, and unwavering devotion to his beloved wife and family. His nearly century-long life stands as a testament to courage, perseverance, and the opportunities that come from embracing new horizons.
He leaves behind a legacy of achievement, friendship, and love that will be treasured by all who knew him.
