Sending thoughts and prayers to the Zukie family .I remember going fishing with him and my brother Todd, being the little sister, he was always so nice to me. I also remember so many Halloween's and his many fabulous costumes, from Tina Turner, the 7up uncola man, and the guy on stilts. He had a smile as bright as the sun and was always a genuine wonderful person. Truly a loss felt for all who knew him. Debbie, my heart hurts for you. God Bless you! Lori Besch

My deepest condolences to Debbie and the rest of Dan’s family. I only knew Dan for a little over three years and feel this loss profoundly. I can only imagine how sad all of you are.
In the short time that I knew him, Dan made a huge impact on my life. He was so generous in sharing his time and his knowledge of fishing. He introduced me to Project Healing Waters and I had the pleasure of volunteering alongside him for the last 2 years. The great things he did with that program can’t be overstated. He was always willing to put the time in and do the work to ensure our events turned out well. Beyond that, he had a truly amazing way of working with people of all types and walks of life. Dan was an excellent angler, and when he was teaching something, you couldn’t help but listen. But you also knew that he cared about you and wanted you to do well. His loving and caring nature, coupled with his knowledge of the sport, helped so many of our great veterans develop a set of skills that would help them in their post-military lives. And everyone always, always had fun fishing with him.
Dan passed on the day before the annual BoSA tournament that was his idea. This event is something that veterans in Healing Waters programs all over Ohio look forward to all year. When I heard the news, I initially thought the timing was unfortunate and the weekend would be marked with sadness rather than happiness.
The sadness was certainly still there but what I saw over the course of the weekend amazed me time and time again. There was a tremendous outpouring of love and support from the community he did so much to build. Endless stories of awesome things he did for veterans and volunteers alike. Little tricks he taught for one situation or another. How he literally changed people’s lives by talking them through various issues.
The community went all out to ensure the weekend was great in honor of him. He was a truly great man, and the volunteers and veterans in our program were resolute in wanting his greatness to carry on and on. When a group like that sets their hearts and minds to something, amazing things can happen. Many did last weekend, and many more will continue to in the future.
Thank you for everything you did for all of us, Dan. We will never, ever forget you.
