Dennis E. Herwerden's Obituary
Dennis Earl Herwerden, born on October 16, 1936, was taken Home on February 22, 2021. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Karen (nee Nyland); their daughters Kimberly (David) Shaarda, Pamela (James) DeVries, and Jill (Scott) Richardson; seven grandchildren, James (Jennifer) Hunt, Abby Hunt, Alison DeVries, Nicole DeVries, Eric DeVries, Amelia Richardson and Eliza Richardson; his brother, Robert (Betsy) Herwerden, and brother-in-law Jack Mathies, and was preceded into eternal rest by his parents, Henry and Nellie (Entingh) Herwerden, a sister, Jean Mathies, and brothers Henry (Marion), and Norman (Jean).
Dennis served in the U.S. Army in the mid-1950's, and was stationed in Germany for two years. He met his future bride upon his return, and they were married on his birthday in 1959. Dennis began working for the Standard Oil Company as a draftsman, and progressed to the position of construction/production manager for the British Petroleum Co. prior to his retirement in 1994.
As an active member of the West Park Christian Reformed Church, he served on the church consistory, was a member of both the church softball and bowling teams, and participated in the Bread Basket and Community Dinner ministries.
He was a faithful fan of the Cleveland Browns and the Indians, enjoyed golfing, and spent a great deal of his time working in his vegetable (corn) garden. He and Karen traveled a great deal together through the years, most notably to the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone National Park, and Las Vegas, and they enjoyed many winters in Estero, Florida.
He was a devoted husband, dad and grandfather, and leaves his family with a legacy of love and his strong faith in the Lord.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 26, 2021 from 5-7 PM in the Chapel at Sunset Memorial Park, 6245 Columbia Rd. North Olmsted. Private interment at Sunset Memorial Park.
