Doris Rose Sloane's Obituary
Doris Rose Sloane, age 93, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2024 in Houston, Texas. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 23, 1931 to the late Paul Otto Thon and Helen Rose Arnold Thon.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Alexander Sloane.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Lorinda Rose Sloane Smith; her sister, Arlene Thon Wadsworth; nieces Suzanne Wadsworth Russel, Sharon Wadsworth Foery, Nora Sloane Clark, Sharlene Sloane Waters, Georgette Sloane Beeby, and Gloria Sloane Cerniway; and nephew Tom Wadsworth.
Doris graduated from Fairview High School in 1949, where she sang in the chorus and played basketball. She cherished the lifelong friendships she made with her fellow “49ers” and attended many reunions. She went on to graduate from Baldwin Wallace College in 1951, where she was a proud member of the Phi Mu Sorority.
In 1954, Doris married Fred Sloane, and they welcomed their daughter, Lorinda, in 1956. Doris lived in her childhood home in Fairview Park for most of her life before moving to Houston to be closer to her daughter.
Doris worked as a legal secretary and had a passion for traveling, exploring both the world and America. She was a dedicated member of the United Church of Christ, where she valued the lifelong friendships she established through the Adult Fellowship.
Doris was actively involved in many activities and hobbies, including the Red Hats Society, Bridge Clubs, Bible Study, Coterie, and the Republican Party, where she was honored as Republican of the Year in 1999. She served as a poll worker and chair for her local precinct and was a leader of a Campfire Girls Troop, supporting her daughter in various parent activities. An avid sewer, Doris embroidered linens, made hats, a sleeping bag, and all types of clothing, including bathing suits. She also enjoyed crafts such as oil painting, flower arranging, and creating holiday decorations.
Doris strived to be as involved and active as she could until the very end. She will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, creativity, and dedication to her family and community. She passed peacefully with her daughter at her side.
Memorial service will be held at Sunset Memorial Chapel, 6245 Columbia Road, North Olmsted, Ohio 44070 on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at 10:00 a.m., with entombment privately at a later date at Sunset Memorial Park, Westwood Abbey Mausoleum, North Olmsted, Ohio.
