Eleanor Doris Zay's Obituary
Eleanor Doris Zay (nee Varga) died peacefully on December 6, 2023, at the age of 98. She was born on March 1, 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio to Steven and Ella Varga. Beloved wife of Albert Zay, loving sister of Richard S. Varga, sister-in-law of Esther Varga, dedicated aunt to Gretchen Varga, and great aunt of Maximilian R. Schmidt and Peter A. Schmidt.
Eleanor was a resident of Cleveland, Ohio for most of her life, beginning on the near west side, through Lakewood, Westlake and finally Avon. Eleanor graduated from the Andrews School in Willoughby. She went on to work at NASA for many years where she had the opportunity to meet Neil Armstrong. Eleanor was a devout Catholic and very proud of her Hungarian heritage. She loved going to the theater and concerts and enjoyed many ethnic cuisines.
Eleanor had a curious and inquisitive mind. She regaled people with stories of her travels and interesting people she met along the way. One of her favorite tales was about actor, Tom Hanks, who rented an apartment in her house while he worked at the Great Lakes Theater performing Shakespeare at the beginning of his career.
