Erna Guia's Obituary
Erna Guia, 92, a resident in Fairview Park, Ohio for more than fifty years, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2023. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 27, 1930, to the late Joseph and Sylvia Leso (nee Peshek). Erna was preceded in death by her husband Emil Guia; and her sister, MariAnne Blain.
Erna was a keen gardener whether she was planting (she was a volunteer at East Side community garden as a teenager) or admiring her vegetable patch at home and at the Farm, plants and flowers at West Valley.
Erna spent over two decades as a Volunteer at Fairview Hospital. She provided many years of volunteering for Cleveland’s Society for the Blind. Erna was quite active at the Rockport Methodist Church in Rocky River which also included being part of the Mary Martha Circle. Mrs. Guia was an accomplished Hammond Organ player who would delight visitors and grandchildren with all sorts of Christmas songs.
Her love of animals was evident with pet ownership for more than 60 years; at any one time she had two dogs, five cats and more than 10 cats at the Farm. Her last cat, Mystique, was with her for 15 years before illness took her less than two months ago.
Erna will be deeply missed by her only son, David (Kathleen) Guia; loving grandmother of twins Lisa Guia and Vicki Guia Collins (deceased) and David Matthew Guia (and wife Jesselle); great-grandmother of Jaye Guia-Hopkins and Griffin Guia-Hopkins; dear friend and devoted caregiver Sharon Zweifel; and a host of nieces and nephews along with extended family and close friends.
Family visitation and funeral ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at 10:45 a.m. Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Westwood Abbey Mausoleum, 6265 Columbia Road, North Olmsted, Ohio 44070.
