Geraldine Hizer's Obituary
Geraldine Hizer, 93, of Rocky River, Ohio, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2020 in Memory Care of The Harbor Court. Gerry was born May 26, 1927 in South Pittsburg, TN, the first of 9 children to the late Ernest and Ruby Smith.
She moved with them to Cleveland, OH in 1941. Gerry worked at Fries & Schuele department store which always wanted her to model their hats. She enjoyed painting, gardening, and lovely flowers. She was very kind, generous, and much loved. She married Herbert “Red” Hizer on June 26, 1944 and subsequently moved to Chattanooga, TN. She and Red had no children but a large dog and cat family. They later moved to Oldsmar, FL due to Red's health. Red sold insurance until he was too ill and Gerry also worked at an insurance company. After Red's death, Gerry moved back to Cleveland, OH in 1978 to be with family. Gerry's insurance company relocated her to Columbus, OH in 1989. She retired in 1996 but then worked part time at Cub Foods. She later worked as a Senior Friend at North Central Mental Health. There, she took seniors, both physically and mentally challenged, shopping and sometimes for ice cream. She also provided support and comfort for clients in hospice. She was an active member of Unity Church of Christianity for many years. In December of 2018, at 91, she fell a couple of times so was moved to The Harbor Court in Rocky River, OH.
Gerry is survived by sister Charlotte (Geoff) Hrach, brother Charles Smith, cousin Evelyn Edminister, six nieces, eleven nephews, and a beloved cat named April. She was preceded in death by siblings Barbara (Joe) Husak, Edith (Frank) Hastings, Donald, Earl (Lorry), Marvin (Betty), and David (Cindy) Smith.
Private family services were held.
