Ilene Janet Meyer's Obituary
Ilene Janet Meyer (formerly of Tarentum, PA) born on April 9, 1941, in Harrison Township, Pennsylvania, peacefully passed away from natural causes on May 30, 2026, in Avon Lake, Ohio. She was 85 years old.
Ilene was a devoted educator, dedicating her life to teaching young minds as both an elementary and preschool teacher until her retirement in 2004. She was the founder of Christ Lutheran Preschool (Avon Lake) and taught at Harrison Elementary (Lakewood), where she shared her passion for learning and nurturing with countless children. A proud alumna of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Ilene’s career was marked by her commitment to education and her unwavering belief in the power of knowledge.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Ilene was a woman of varied interests and deep passions. She was an avid birdwatcher, a member of the Audubon Society, and found peace and inspiration in the natural world around her. Her hands were often busy with cross-stitching, creating beautiful pieces that reflected her artistic spirit. She also loved to plant flowers and garden. While her intentions were good, she would be the first person to admit she was not the best at keeping her flowers alive! Ilene was also a devoted fan of the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Indians, cheering on her favorite teams with enthusiasm. Tennis was another sport close to her heart, and she always looked forward to watching Wimbledon and the U.S. Open every year.
Ilene loved to travel, and after her retirement, she explored the rich cultures and landscapes of Europe, Ecuador, Florida, and Arizona, broadening her horizons and collecting memories along the way. Remarkably, she embraced her adventurous spirit by getting her first tattoo in her mid-70s, a testament to her zest for life.
Family was at the center of Ilene’s world, and she cherished every moment spent with her loved ones. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sheldon Meyer; her mother, Susan (Cajka) Hudec; her father, John Hudec; and her brother, John Hudec. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her surviving family: her daughter, Erika Hoyt, and son-in-law, Jason; her son, Stephen Meyer, and daughter-in-law, Christine; and her treasured grandchildren, Sarah Kasicky, Dylan Hoyt, Alexis Meyer, Alexis Johnson, and Rachel Meyer, and her great-grandchildren, Olivia Kasicky, James Kasicky, and Kamryn Kasicky. Last, but not least, her beloved dog Ozzy.
Ilene’s life was a garden of love, dedication, and adventure. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing her. May the birds sing sweetly with you always.
Ilene’s memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Sunset Memorial Chapel, 6245 Columbia Road, North Olmsted, OH 44070. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
