Janis Zakis' Obituary
Janis Zakis, 88, of Brook Park Ohio, passed peacefully on June 11th, 2023. Born to Julija Kapostins and Roberts Zakis on June 7, 1935, he is survived by his three children, Robert (and Kelly) Zakis, Mark Zakis, and Lisa (and Brian) Kraus, his grandchildren Hannah and Ian Kraus, his long-time companion Inara Ristl, her daughter Tamara (and Joe) Hornak and their three sons Noah, Logan and Owen Hornak, brother and sister-in-law Uldis and Irma Zakis, as well as loving nieces, nephews and family members.
Born in Riga Latvia, Janis (John) lived a full life. After leaving his home country during WWII and living years in DP camps, Janis along with his brother and mother came to the U.S. in 1950, where they eventually settled in Cleveland. Graduating from West Tech High, he began his career as a draftsman apprentice for TRW. He served in the Army, and upon return, was welcomed back to TRW where he became a Process Engineer and remained with them for his entire career.
Janis enjoyed soccer and could beat almost anyone in ping pong in his youth. Later he became an avid golfer, organizing many tournaments and walking away with his fair share of trophies. He always kept a faithful dog at his side, and always had a pocketful of treats. His true passions included wine making, vegetable gardening and stamp collecting. His love of his Latvian community was strong and an integral part of his life.
Janis created a life of deep friendships wherever he went and led his life with generosity and kindness. He was a storyteller who could just as easily converse on any topic, anywhere. He will long be remembered with love and missed dearly.
A memorial service will be held Monday, June 19, 2023 at 10:00 am, with viewing from 9:30-10:00 at the United Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church of Cleveland at 15120 Detroit Ave in Lakewood. Interment will follow the service at Sunset Cemetery in North Olmsted and a lunch reception back at the church for all family and friends afterwards.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the United Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church.
