I have decades of Uncle Buck memories, so sharing only a few is difficult. One of the first was his love of George Carlin, and hatred of MTV. We visited Aunt Marge and Uncle Buck when MTV first began, and I believe his comment on the new channel was ‘What a bunch of crap! Waste of time!’. Classic Uncle Buck.
Another memory is from when he and Aunt Marge visited us in Pittsburgh and our Persian Snowball broke into Aunt Marge and Uncle Buck’s bedroom as they were sleeping and parked himself on Uncle Buck’s bald head. He was a cat convert (at least a Snowball convert) from that point on.
But the most precious moments were during my ‘see the relatives’ tours I’d made for years, always staying at Aunt Marge and Uncle Buck’s place. We were both early risers, so he brought in the paper to read and begin the crossword while I had coffee, and he then prepared hot water for when Aunt Marge woke up. The crossword was left on the table so he could continue filling in words during the day. I’m also an avid crossword puzzler and appreciated Uncle Buck gifting me with erasable pens the last time I was there, along with the requisite gift from his workshop, usually something useful like strap wrenches or other tools. He will be missed by everyone but know he and Aunt Marge are happily together again, he with his ‘2 Buck Chuck’ Trader Joe’s cabernet, and Aunt Marge with her sake and chocolate.
