John Roger Newman's Obituary
John Roger Newman, 93, went to his heavenly home on June 25, 2017, after first returning home to Ohio in May 2017 following many years residing in the Tampa, FL area.
Born May 2, 1924, one of nine children born to Harry A. Newman and Rhua (Ritter) Newman, John grew up in the Streetsboro area and attended Streetsboro High School.
He was predeceased by his wife of more than 50 years, Jacqueline Louise Newman (2006); wife Mary Jo (Elink-Schuuman) Newman (2017); sisters Lucy, Alice, Esther, Grace, and Dorothy. Survivors include son John Scott Newman (wife Sandra) of Zephyrhills, FL and St. Albans, VT; brothers Harold and David; sister Florence; a large contingent of nephews, nieces and other extended family.
John met his wife Jackie while she was a student at Kent State. They married and resided in Cleveland sharing a duplex with beloved mother-in-law, Eva Hooker. John was employed by Cleveland Trust where he used his gift for working with numbers. Sometimes on his lunch break, John would walk to the TV station where he watched Jackie teach as they filmed for the Cleveland Public Schools. Friends often joined them for cards, organ music (courtesy of Jackie and Scott) and perhaps a cigar with John.
Later, the family moved to Avon and travelled widely in their motorhome visiting friends and family located throughout the U.S. It was this RV’ing hobby which led to residing in Zephyrhills and the formation of many more enduring friendships. Following Jackie’s death, John met Mary Jo who he married in Feb 2011. They continued their shared love of travel and John took his first trip abroad enjoying an extended river cruise.
He was a loving, easy-going man who enjoyed a good laugh. We love and miss you already, John.
We thank the ER and ICU staff at Summa Akron City Hospital who gave excellent care not only to John but also to his family.
Visitation is 6-8 p.m., Thursday, June 29, 2017, at the Sunset Chapel, 6245 Columbia Rd., North Olmsted, where funeral services will take place at 10 a.m., Friday, June 30. Interment at Sunset Memorial Park, North Olmsted.
