John Carl Smith “Jack”, 85, passed away peacefully February 24, 2014, in the beautiful surroundings of the Hospice of Western Reserve in Westlake. In the last year of his life he had survived three strokes and suffered dementia, but he faced those challenge with dignity, courage, and overall good humor. He was a devoted family man and friend to many. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Nannette June Smith (nee’ Boyd); his only child, daughter Colleen Wentworth Jones, his son-in-law Christopher Martin Jones and his two granddaughters Caitlyn Hope Jones and Ashlyn Grace Jones of Sussex, Wisconsin; his nephew Steven Boyd and his niece Anne Ireland and her family. Jack is preceded in death by both of his parents.
Jack was born on September 11, 1928, to Florence O’Rourke Smith and John Carl Smith in Cleveland Ohio. He is a graduate of James Ford Rhodes High School where he excelled at sports. He attended Baldwin Wallace on a football scholarship, then transferred to Ohio University. After graduating from college he served as an Intelligence Officer in the Air Force. After his time in the service he worked for IPC/Penton Publishing first as a Principal, Publisher Representative Business, then as a Publisher of “Handling & Shipping Management”, “Presidential Issue” and “Management Travel and Leisure Time.” He was respected by his coworkers and was a champion of the up and coming.
Jack was honored by being named in Marquis’ Who’s Who In the World; Marquis’ Who’s Who In America; and Men of Achievement. He was also a member of Sigma Chi; Sigma Delta Chi; and, The Wings Club, New York. In his retirement he was Associated with the American Foreign Policy Council of Washington DC.
Jack always believed you should “Do your best and God will forgive the rest.” His family invites his friends to help remember Jack’s life and celebrate his spirit.
VISITATION will take place on Friday, February 28,2014 from 4 PM- 8 PM at The Chapel at Sunset Memorial Park, 6245 Columbia Rd., North Olmsted, 44070. FUNERAL SERVICES will take place on Saturday, March 1, 2014, 10 AM at The Chapel. Entombment in Sunset Memorial Park to follow.
