John Charles Sturman's Obituary
John C. Sturman beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, died at the age of 91 at home in Greer, South Carolina. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, John lived most of his life in the state and city of his birth. A graduate of Case Western Reserve University, he earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in electrical engineering. He completed ROTC and served in the US Air Force reserves. He had a long career as an aerospace engineer stationed at NASA’s Lewis Research Center, and a post-retirement position as a research test engineer for the Analex Corporation. A skilled and avid photographer, he documented his large family and their travels in the motorhome that he custom designed and built. Married for 70 years to his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Crafts, together they raised seven children and welcomed 21 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Survivors include his children: Janet Sturman (Arthur Weiss), John Sturman (Tanya Schiketanz), Helen McClain (Joseph McClain), William Sturman, Susan Sturman, and Dorothy Sturman. His youngest son James Sturman predeceased him as did his grandson Issac Smith (2018), and his daughter-in-law Pamela Sturman (2024). Survivors also include his grandchildren: Lauren McClain, Abbey McClain, Jacob McClain, Michael Weiss, Andrea Weiss, Veronica Sturman, Addie Sturman, Isabelle Vance, Megan Arias, Ryan Sturman, Benjamin Sturman, Nathaniel Spayd, Jordan Spayd, Jocelyn Spayd, Hannah Smith, Grace DeBaltzo, Caleb Sturman, Roma Smith, Justin Sturman, Cassie Sturman, and his great grandchildren: Saoirse Hosman, Ruari Hosman, Maeve Hosman, Rowan McClain, Lilly McClain, Olivia Arias, Lacey Arias, Owen Arias, Noah DeBaltzo, Levi DeBaltzo, Samson DeBaltzo, Calvin Weiss Quinn, Lilliana Weiss Smith, Rosabelle Smith, Azula Vance, Mary Chandler Walker.
Graveside services and burial will take place on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at 10 AM at Sunset Memorial Park. Family and friends will gather at 9:45 AM to line up in procession at Sunset Memorial Chapel, 6245 Columbia Road, North Olmsted, OH 44070.
