Melinda Bernath's Obituary
Melinda H. Bernath, age 88, was born on December 23, 1933 in Budapest, Hungary. She passed away peacefully at her home with her two daughters by her side on February 12, 2022. She married Dr. Otto Bernath on September 8, 1956. As newlyweds, she escaped during the Hungarian Revolution in October 1956 to start a new life in America. She and Otto were married for 64 years. Melinda was a member of the Womens Auxiliary, as well as the International Institute, where she initiated a Gourmet Dinner Club and made many lifelong friends. She was a Girl Scout Leader and Homeroom mother to both daughters, Linda and Julie. She earned the name “Grami,” and she was always THERE. She was THERE at every swim meet. She was THERE at every dance class and recital. She was THERE when anyone needed a ride. She was THERE fixing her famous Grami soup or sandwich. She was THERE to offer her wisdom and advice and she was always THERE to comfort a broken heart. She always made certain that her grandchildren were taken care of before anything.
Melinda loved opera, classical music, ballet, and tennis (watching it). She loved traveling to beautiful places around the world, but cruises were her favorite. She loved animals and they loved her as well. There was always a dog or cat in the house. Melinda was an avid Bridge player, participating in several bridge groups well into her 80’s.
Melinda was preceded in death by her husband, Otto. Melinda is survived by her two daughters, Linda and Julie; their husbands, Bernie and Al; four grandchildren, Nicolaus, Michael, May, and Max.
