Michael Jay Surma's Obituary
Michael J. Surma, born on February 10, 1959, passed away peacefully on June
5, 2026. The son of the late Michael and Jeanine (Konarski) Surma, Michael
was a proud Ohio native. He graduated from Berea High School in 1977 and
went on to complete is automotive mechanics training at Polaris Career
Center that same year. In 1997, he married the love of his life, Cindy, and they
shared nearly three decades together.
Michael worked as an automotive mechanic for Sohio, ProCare, and Mr. Tire
until 2015, when health challenges related to Multiple Sclerosis led to his
retirement. He was a devoted stepfather to the late Casey Karriker and Jessica
(Karriker) Dean. He is also survived by Casey's wife, Kelley (Wilson) Karriker,
and their children, Caley, Clara, and Kaleb; and by Jessica and her husband,
Scott Dean, and their children, Jaxon, James, and Jase. Michael was also
blessed with two great-grandchildren, Elliyonna and Dominick.
He is also survived by his sister, Judith (Surma) Smith and her husband, Kent;
and their daughters, Jena, Jill, and Julie, along with their families.
Racing was Michael's greatest passion. Whether it was NASCAR, NHRA, or
local drag racing, he loved everything about the sport. He built show cars and
drag cars, attended races whenever he could, and was a dedicated fan of
Cleveland sports and golf. His strong work ethic, sense of humor, and deep
love for family will be remembered by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at
Sunset Cemetery in North Olmsted, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Multiple
Sclerosis Society in Michael's memory.
