Miles met the love of his life, Elizabeth “Betty” Hughes, in Cleveland, and they were married on September 10, 1960. Their enduring partnership spanned nearly 65 years, filled with shared journeys, laughter, and love. Together, they enjoyed their family immensely. Sons Miles (wife Alysia) and Dean, and grandchildren, Cooper and Hope, all carry forward his zeal for adventure.
Miles served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1962, a period that shaped his discipline and commitment to excellence. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Ohio State University in 1961, where he was a proud member of the Triangle Engineering Fraternity and made lifelong friends.
His professional journey led him to Lockheed Missile & Space Company, beginning in 1962 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Maria, California. By 1965, he had relocated to Sunnyvale, California, where he spent nearly four decades driving innovation in aerospace. Miles played a pivotal role in satellite design, production, and launch programs, ultimately retiring as Vice President of the Space Systems Division. His leadership helped shape the future of American space exploration.
Miles was a man of many passions. From childhood, he was drawn to building models and electrical toys, a spark that ignited a lifelong love of engineering. He excelled academically and athletically, leading his high school on the track & field high jump team. His mind was always active, analyzing, organizing, and solving problems with boundless energy and enthusiasm.
He had a sharp wit and a warm heart. He found joy in spending time with family and friends, travel around the globe and fine food and wine. An avid golfer, he achieved a cherished milestone with a hole-in-one in 1998, as witnessed by his son Miles.
