Philip W. Harbison's Obituary
Philip W. Harbison, 77, of Parma Heights, passed away on Sept. 19, 2022. Phil was born April 15, 1945, in Cleveland, to William and Elizabeth Harbison. The family, which also included older brother Barry, lived in Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood before moving to Parma Heights.
Phil graduated from Valley Forge High School (class 1964), where he played three instruments (clarinet, flute, piccolo) in the school’s Spirt of ’76 team. Phil earned a bachelor’s in education from Findlay College and a master’s in education and public history from the University of Akron. His professional life included time spent as a high school history teacher.
Phil was an integral part of the Brooklyn United Presbyterian Church, serving in many leadership roles over the years. When the church closed its doors, Phil was a leader in the transition process. He joined John Knox Presbyterian Church, where he aided in keeping connections with BUPC crossover members.
Phil was a loyal fan of Cleveland sports teams and an expert on Ohio History. He also enjoyed bowling, golf, and genealogy.
Family was very important to Phil. Uncle Phil was a beloved member of the Harbison/Hansen families, showing great interest in his niece and nephews and their children. He showed how much he cared for friends and family members by always sending birthday and anniversary cards. In addition to his immediate family, Phil was close to his late aunt Louise and stayed connected to family members throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Phil was preceded in death by brother Barry Harbison (Christine). He is survived by niece Robin Hansen (Drew); nephews Brad (Julie) and Mark Harbison (Jeanne); great-nieces Meredith and Cate Hansen and Lauren and Emily Harbison; and great-nephew Neil Harbison.
A memorial service will be held at John Knox Presbyterian Church, on Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. Please meet at the Church. 25200 Lorain Road, North Olmsted, Ohio 44070. Donations can be made in Phil’s memory to John Knox Presbyterian Church or St. Jude’s.
