Robert Eugene Bartlett's Obituary
Robert â??Bobâ? Eugene Bartlett, Jr., age 78, of Boquete, Chiriqui, Panama passed away on Friday, February 15, 2013, due to complications from a heart attack.
Bob was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 7, 1934. He graduated from Lakewood High School in Lakewood, Ohio. He continued on to receive both a Bachelorâ??s and a Masterâ??s degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Society. He later obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
Bob was married to Ana â??Anitaâ? Aoun of Panama City, Panama on August 24, 1968. Bob and Anita were married for 44 years.
Bob worked in various fields, including as an insurance adjuster in Puerto Rico, a professor of political science at Southeast Missouri State University, and an analyst specializing in sub-Saharan Africa for the U.S. Department of the Army, Psychological Operations at Ft. Bragg (Fayetteville), North Carolina. Additionally, he was a world traveler, especially to Europe, Latin America, and Africa, and was fluent in English, French, and Spanish.
Bob had many hobbies including classical music, science fiction, history, and reading, but perhaps his greatest love was amateur radio. His father introduced him to amateur radio as a child and his love for amateur radio continued until his death. Bob (call sign W8FTD, later also HP3FTD) joined the Amateur Radio Club at the University of Pennsylvania as an undergraduate student at the Moore School in 1952 and was at Penn as a graduate student during 1956-1958 and 1960-1961. He also eventually became Club President, after first holding various other Club positions and persuaded the University to fund the Club for the first time. Bob was a member of the American Radio Relay League. He won numerous amateur radio contests over the years, including third in the world in the 2007 ARRL International DX Contest and first in Panama in the 2006 CQ Worldwide DX Contest. Most recently, he was actively involved in the Amateur Radio Club of Boquete, Panama.
Bob is survived by his loving wife Anita, his daughters Annette Bartlett Golden and her husband Steve and son Avery of Greensboro, North Carolina, Aimee Ackley and her husband Ed and her children Gabriela and Ian of Saratoga Springs, New York, and Angelique Montano and her husband Alipio and sons Robert and Michael of Houston, Texas.
Bob was a devoted husband, compassionate father, and generous friend. He will be remembered for his intellect, his love of animals and nature, and his kindness. He will be greatly missed.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated for Bob at St. Juan the Baptist Catholic Church in Boquete, Panama. He will be buried in Cleveland, Ohio alongside his parents, Robert E. Bartlett, Sr. and Irma Jean Bartlett.
A Committal Service will take place at 2:00 PM, on Saturday, March 30, 2013, at Sunset Memorial Park, N. Olmsted, OH.
