Robert "Bob" Withnell's Obituary
Robert passed away Monday April 3, 2023 in his home surrounded by his family and under the caring team support from Hospice of the Western Reserve.
Robert was born May 17, 1936 in Manchester, England to the late Amy (nee Archer) and Herbert Edward Withnell. He grew up with 3 brothers and money was tight in the Industrial area of Manchester. He had to learn at a young age to appreciate the simple gifts in life which carried with him throughout his life.
On August 11, 1962 he married the love of his life Noreen. Having the desire for betterment for their desired family and being the adventurers they were, they opted to immigrate to the United States in 1965 with their first born in tow. Having sold their home in England and with $500 in their pocket they gratefully lived with relatives until they could afford a place of their own. His patience and faith for betterment paid off and he and our mom were able to live comfortably and successfully raised 4 children. They have been able to enjoy retirement together for over 20 years with more adventures in travels to Australia, back to England and visits with their children and grandchildren.
Over his lifetime he had many roles: Son, Brother, Uncle, Father, Student (though did not care for this role much), Athlete, Dancer, Church member, Royal Military, Spouse, Landlord, Scout Leader, Sports Enthusiast (Track and Field, American Football, European Soccer and Rugby), Ford Motor worker for over 33 years, Karaoke King, pet sitter, and top Wheel of Fortune follower just to name a few. In his free time he enjoyed working on cryptograms, puzzles, and crosswords.
He was quiet, gentle yet strong in conviction. Robert was a great example of love and devotion for family and friends. He also willingly gave his time to help whenever needed. We do not have enough fingers within our family to count the numerous packing and moves during his children's adventures into adulthood or college years and later or the number of rooms he has built, patched or painted or roofs he has worked.
Robert leaves to cherish his memory his wife of over 60 years, Noreen, his Step sister Muriel (Bryan) Townsend, Sister in Law Rhoda Withnell, Brother in Law Barry Preston, cousin Betty (Brian) Dietz, his 4 children: Philip Leigh (Debra) Withnell, Michael (Amanda) Withnell, Rosalyn (David) Pfahl and Rebecca Curtis. Grandchildren Spencer Withnell, Lily Curtis, Amelia Curtis, Sarah Cigicl, Katie Wyles and step grandchildren Sarah Pfahl, Matthew Pfahl, and Cassandra Pfahl, great grand children Evelyn, Maize, and Noah and as well as numerous nephews, nieces and grand nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers John Withnell, Fred (Muriel) Withnell and Herbert (Betty) Withnell.
We will miss the quietness of his nature and the peace you would feel just sitting in his presence. He was a True English Gentleman. He lived the American dream, somewhat financially via hard work, but more so via RICHNESS OF FAMILY, immediate and extended.
Services to be held April 15, 2023 at Sunset Memorial at 10:15 AM at the Memorial Fountain.
In lieu of flowers please forward memorial gifts in Robert’s name to Hospice of The Western Reserve 30080 Hospice Way Westlake, OH 44145.
