Robert Bruce Campbell's Obituary
An end of Era. Bruce Campbell (age 80 and of Strongsville), my grandpa passed away early this morning, January 14, 2017. Bruce seemed to be from a different time.
He was the kind of guy that had big stories that always in involved an animal attacking, one of his “buddies”, a job he was working on, a shot and a beer, and would sometimes end with “Queenie” (my grandma) being upset with him. You can almost bet that the stories he told had been fabricated for your and his entertainment.
He would help anyone, he had a very generous personality. He would offer you the shirt off his back and then invite you in to have a drink.
He would make friends, or as he put it buddies, everywhere. The grocery store, hardware store, anywhere.
A compliment from my grandpa was always sincere. He didn’t hand out compliments, he really meant one when he said it.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean to make Bruce out to be a Saint. In fact, after the numerous stories he has told I’m convinced my grandma was one. She had to be an angel on earth for putting up with his antics.
But, my grandpa was a lot of things.
He was an amazing friend to so many.
He was proud of the work he did both the electrical work he did at home.
He was proud to be just who he was. He was not materialistic.
Most importantly, he was proud and loved his family. He bragged as often as someone would listen to his families accomplishments- and of course how he helped them attain that goal.
I would like to share a few things I learned from Bruce:
- Make buddies and be a buddy. Be a real friend, the one who people call when they need a helping hand.
- Be generous, even when you will receive nothing in return.
- Have a garden.
- Be a good story teller. If you can’t tell a story appreciate a good story, even if it is fabricated.
- Love and be proud of your family – you’ve only got one.
- Get a dog. A dog will think you are the best person in the world even when you wake up grumpy and have nothing nice to say.
- Last but not least – enjoy everyday. When it quitting time stop working go hang out with your friends, family or pet. Go on a walk. Have a beer with some one and swap stories. You won’t regret it.
I hope as grandpa crossed over his “Queenie” meet him hugged him and asked, “what took you so long?” He seemed lost without her at times.
So, if you will hold up a glass and toast my grandpa, my dad’s dad, my children’s “great papa Bruce”. He would really get a kick out of it.
And as he always said as he left, God Bless.”
Love Always,
Elizabeth
