Sheldon James Meyer's Obituary
Sheldon “Jim” Meyer of Avon Lake, Ohio passed away on February 10, 2024, at the age of 87 in Bay Village, OH. Sheldon was born on March 22, 1936, in Cleveland, OH.
After graduating from John Marshall High School in 1954, he went on to obtain his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Case Institute of Technology. He married Ilene Janet Meyer on November 4, 1967. They shared 56 wonderful years of marriage together in Avon Lake. Sheldon spent his entire career working at NASA Lewis (Glenn) Research Center. During his time at NASA, he oversaw the development agency critical Aeronautics programs, benchmark scientific experiments, and chaired the NASA Safety Committee. He was a friend and mentor to many until his retirement in 1997. He was an avid tennis player and an extremely talented scale modeler, a talent that he used as his “side hustle” for years, painting O-scale trains for countless clients. Sheldon was the ultimate collector. His house was host to countless school field trips and gatherings to view his various collections and hear him play his mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ that could often be heard outside as you would walk by the house. His love for classical music, trains, tools, and military history was unrivaled. Nobody could tell a story like Sheldon. From the story of the pickle barrel to stealing trains from his neighbor as a child, his tales from his past experiences (embellished or not) will never be forgotten by those who have heard them.
He is survived by his beloved wife Ilene; daughter Erika (Jason) Hoyt and son Stephen (Christine) Meyer; grandchildren Dylan (Hoyt); Alexis (Johnson); Alexis and Rachel Meyer and Sarah (Nicholas) Kasicky; great-grandchildren Olivia and James (Kasicky); as well as step-siblings, nieces and nephews. Sheldon was predeceased by his mother and stepfather Mildred and Norbert Hahn; father and stepmother Albert and Mary Meyer; and brother Kenneth Meyer.
A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, February 22, 2024, from 4-8:00 PM at Sunset Memorial Chapel, 6245 Columbia Road, North Olmsted, Ohio 44070. Memorial service will follow on Friday, February 23, 2024, at 2 PM at the chapel.
