Shirley Lorainne Thurber's Obituary
Shirley L. Thurber, age 89, of Rocky River, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2026. Born on April 5, 1937, she was the cherished daughter of the late Fred and Anna Lucile Gentry.
Shirley was the beloved wife of the late Gerald Thurber, with whom she shared 56 wonderful years of marriage. Together they built a loving family and a lifetime of treasured memories.
She leaves behind her devoted daughters, Diane Thurber (Jefferson Cronin) and Suzanne (Kenneth) Rafferty; her adored granddaughter, Raven Rafferty; and her sister, Avis Hollock. Shirley was preceded in death by her brothers and sister: Fred Gentry Jr., Jack Gentry, Betty Jane, Curtis Lyle, and James Gentry.
Shirley was deeply committed to her community and remained actively involved throughout her life. She was a proud member of PERI Cuyahoga County Chapter 3, where she served as chapter president and worked tirelessly on behalf of her fellow retirees. She was also a dedicated member of the Democratic Club, an organization she greatly valued and in which she took great pride. Through her involvement, she formed many lasting friendships and made meaningful contributions to causes she believed in.
Known for her warmth, kindness, and steadfast dedication to both family and community, Shirley will be remembered for the love she shared, the friendships she cultivated, and the positive impact she had on those around her. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her family and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Cleveland Clinic’s year round fundraiser VeloSano, a cause close to the family's heart, supporting innovative cancer research and treatment.
