Thomas Edward DeVries Jr.'s Obituary
Thomas Edward DeVries Jr. Born June 10, 1926, in Rocky River, Ohio went to be with our Lord
in Heaven on March 24, 2023.
Tom graduated from John Marshall High School and went into service with the Navy June 6,
1944. He served as a signalman third class during WWII. He received the Victory Medal -
American Era Campaign.
After Honorable Discharge, Mr. DeVries found employment in the Cleveland, Ohio Police
Department. After 5 years as a patrolman, he worked with health care supervisors in the
medical bureau, coordinating and supervising medical care for police staff.
He and his wife, Margaret Postema were married in June of 1948. They had four children,
Linda Klemencic, Tom DeVries III, Donald DeVries, and Philip DeVries, who grew up on
Courtland Ave. near John Marshall High School.
Tom and his family attended West Park Christian Reformed Church where he held several
positions of leadership.
Mr. DeVries enjoyed fishing in Canada with his family, at Irwin Inn on Stoney Lake.
He was active in several bowling leagues.
Tom and his brother Richard loved vocal music and were consistent singers in their church, as
well as the singing group The Knickerbockers.
Thomas DeVries was preceded in death by his parents, Sophie and Tom; his first wife, Margaret; his second wife, Dottie. his sister, JoAnne; his brother, Richard; and his sister-in-law, Georgianne.
He is survived by his daughter Linda Klemencic and Fred, sons, Tom and Laura DeVries, Donald DeVries and Phillip and Yona DeVries, and close friend Caryl. Tom had 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 3, 2023, 4-7 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Services, 6245 Columbia Road, North Olmsted, Ohio 44070. A funeral ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at 10 a.m. also at the Sunset Chapel. The family welcomes you to join in a reception in Thomas’s honor after interment 11am-1pm at Sunset Chapel’s lower level.
