Thurman R. Payne's Obituary
Thurman Payne – age 88 passed away on February 11th 2021 in his beloved “Western” room at his home. Thurman was born in Bradshaw, West Virginia and is proceeded in death by his loving wife of more than 68 years, Carmia Payne. Thurman is also proceeded in death by his parents, James Harvey and Lula Belle Payne and 5 brothers and 2 sisters. Thurman is survived by his loving children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Thurman worked at the Brookpark Ford complex for 50 years. Thurman was a champion of the union movement within the UAW. He was known for negotiating contractual improvements that still exist today. When the auto industry was suffering during the late 70’s & early 80’s, Thurman was a loud and consistent voice to keep employment at the Cleveland complex. Calling for and conducting rallies, Thurman partnered with politicians ranging from Mayors to U.S. Senators to preserve work for the Cleveland auto worker.
Thurman served as President of UAW Local 1250 for 2 Terms, he also served as Building Chairman of the Cleveland Casting Plant, 1st Vice President, Committeeman, President of Sub-council and President of the Foundry Council. Thurman was an advocate for Civil Rights and equality for all workers, hosting many civil rights leaders including activist Rosa Parks.
Friends and family visitation hours will be 10 AM till 12 PM on Tuesday February 16th, 2021 at the Cathedral of Life Church- 5375 Jaycox Road, North Ridgeville, Ohio 44039. COVID protocols will be practiced. There will be a private family celebration of his life immediately following visitation.
Thurman Payne will be dearly missed by all that came in contact with him.
