Wayne Robert Fortlage's Obituary
Wayne Robert Fortlage, 92, of Brooklyn, Ohio, passed away on July 18, 2025. Born August 3, 1932, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Elmer and Pearl (née Baldi) Fortlage, Wayne lived a life of service, dedication, and unwavering love for his family and community.
On October 30, 1954, Wayne married the love of his life, Mary Ann (née Kovar) Fortlage, at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Cleveland. Their remarkable 70-year journey together was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they raised three children: Renee, Donna (Ken), and Jay, whose lives reflect Wayne’s values and character.
Wayne was a proud grandfather to Kendra, Amber (Brandon), Allison, and Shane, and a joyful great-grandfather to Scarlett and Jackson. His legacy also lives on through his brothers Paul (Carol – deceased) Fortlage and Bob (Myra) Fortlage, his many cherished nieces and nephews, and countless others who were touched by his warmth and quiet wisdom.
A graduate of West Tech High School, Wayne bravely served in the U.S. Navy and dedicated nearly 30 years of his life to protecting his city as a firefighter and captain for Cleveland. His sense of duty continued long into retirement through over three decades of volunteer service in the Florida park system, where he gave generously of his time and spirit.
Wayne’s strength, humility, and deep-rooted faith defined his life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to Dr. Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4470 Ridge Rd, Cleveland, Ohio, 44144—where his faith found a home.
