Dr. William L. "Bill" Fielder's Obituary
Dr. William L. Fielder (Bill), age 96, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2024. Born on February 19, 1928, he was the beloved son of the late John and Edna Fielder.
Dr. Fielder was a devoted husband to Ruth Fielder and a loving father to Linda (Douglas) Preiser, Sherrin Fielder, William Fielder, and the late David Fielder. He was a proud grandfather to Andrew, Hannah, Chloe, Gavin, Lola, and Kate.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Warren Fielder, Donald Fielder, Gledith Boyes, John Fielder, Harrall Fielder, and Robert Fielder.
William served for 18 months in South Korea as a Corporal Medical Technician. Subsequently, he obtained his bachelors and masters in Chemistry from Indiana University and graduated from Case Western Reserve with a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry in 1958. He met Ruth Ellen Shankland while at Case and they were married on November 8, 1958.
Dr. Fielder had a distinguished career as a chemist at NASA with 40 published papers in the field of electrochemistry with contributions to the space shuttle battery cell.
William had many interests including music, art and painting, and was an avid Cleveland baseball fan, as well as an USFSA figure skating judge.
Bill will be remembered as a man of quiet grace, humor, a loving father and grandfather, and a man who served his country with dignity.
The family will receive friends on Friday October 11th at Sunset Memorial Chapel at 11:30 am to be followed by a short memorial service at noon, 6245 Columbia Road North Olmsted, Ohio.
