Mr. Mac was one of my favorite teachers, and I'll never forget how kind and gentle he was with his students. My favorite memory of him was when he noted my frustration with a particular math unit (I was in eighth grade at the time). I was stunned as he pulled an empty desk right next to mine, looked me in the eyes and said, "Mary ... relax. You can do this." He observed my apprehensive approach to math, told me to breathe and put my anxieties aside -- and just focus. Right then and there, he arranged weekly one-on-one sessions for a month after school.
He taught me not only how to confront my math anxiety, but also to believe in myself and to see the true beauty of math.
His composed demeanor affected me in a lifelong way -- when I became a teacher (no, not math!), I called upon his fine example of recognizing students who needed boosts of confidence -- and remembered how well a calm and gentle approach can work wonders with anxious learners.
In my book, you were golden, Mr. Mac. Thank you!
