I want to extend my sympathy to the family over the passing of David. As a new indexer trying to get a handle on embedded indexing, David helped me above and beyond with his excellent software IXMLEmbedder. I was amazed at his patience and generosity with his time. It's taken me ages to figure how to put into words how much I miss Dave. He was a dear friend. I still don't really have the words, and lord knows he rarely ever seriously looked serious, as in the photo above. What fun we had together. I miss him. Lately, as we continue to work together where he too tread, I am reminded of his spirit and energy. I hear his voice, and his gentle humor and assuring chuckle. Thank you. Hugs and warmth to all his survivors and family.
On behalf of Hansard Services at the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, we would like to extend our sincere condolences to the Ream family. We are so sorry for your loss. Dave was instrumental in providing our department the software and expertise to be able to create and publish our own indexes online. Dave was so generous with his knowledge and time, and was always willing to offer technical help and guidance. We were always happy to meet up with Dave at conferences and thank him for his support in person. My condolences to the Ream family. I am so sorry for your loss. Dave was a very special person to me. We both worked at Chi Corporation which was a young company with young employees. On weekends we would all hang out together, camping, biking, rafting. Dave was so much fun. A bunch of us once rented a sailboat and traveled around the Lake Erie islands. Dave was in charge of motoring the boat in and out of the docks. We all thought he knew what he was doing until afterward when he said he never motored a boat before! But then, none of us had. We were so young and foolish! I actually had two "dates" with Dave. Once, a number of years ago, a mutual friend of ours, Keith Dick, was in town and someone was giving a party for him. I wanted to see him so Dave invited me to go with him to the party as his plus 1. And my husband said, "Sure. Go." Another time my husband was out of town and I had won tickets to the Rock and Roll Induction ceremony. Dave was the obvious choice to go with me. We had great fun that night. He was always my plan B if anything happened to my husband. We laughed about that because he had yet another friend, Mary, who also said Dave was HER plan B. He was such an extraordinary guy. So interesting with a great sense of humor. I just recently sent him an email filled with puns and he replied with yet another pun. He was a master of puns. He will be so missed. I find it so hard to believe he is gone.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Dave was excellent at what he did, and added so much to the indexing community. His ability to explain things to non-techie people was wonderful, and he was very generous with his time. He was a huge asset to the indexers, and he will be missed. On behalf of the German Network of Indexers (DNI) I'd like to express our sincere condolences. Just one year ago Dave was one of our international guests at the 2016 International Indexing Conference in Frankfurt. He also obviously enjoyed some hiking in Germany before arriving at the conference. We'd like to emphasize that Dave was a well respected colleague among the German indexers who met him. He was extremely knowledgeable, always willing to help on difficult indexing issues, patient, professional, and the ultimate supporter of indexing and indexers. Dave was always a true gentleman and scholar. He was willing to be a support from behind the scenes and didn't seek credit or personal glory. He was extremely patient in explaining intricacies of software and he had a marvelous sense of humor. I admired his knowledge, his discretion, and I'll never forget how he could reduce me to tears of helpless laughter with some superbly absurd anecdote. I am sorry, sorry, sorry he's gone.–Maria
