George has been my neighbor for over fifty years, since I was twenty years old. I"ve watched him raise his children, tend to his yard, sit outside and enjoy the quiet of our wooded neighborhood, and like all of us grpw older. A couple of weeks ago, he saw me out with my dogs, turned directly to me, and gave a huge wave. Usually we just do the minimal wave, but this was different. A grand gesture. I was surprised and returned it, the same way he gave it. Then he turned away and went into the house. I had the thought, my goodness, I've watched George through all these decades, we've literally passed our lives in close proximity, and here we are now. Both of us old. We know each other in all iterations, from those small observations of our lives, passing in proximity. I know I can say he was a good guy, a tough guy, a man who stood with me in late winter to save from development, our beautiful woods(full of thise darn raccoons that he hated and I loved.) I can say without reservation, he was a good, brave man, and as I watched that big wave, perhaps an intended farewell, I know absolutely, I will miss him. He was as constant a presence as is the woods and he grew over the decades to be as irreplaceable and precious. Godspeed, George....I still will look for you.
