I rotated through Jerry Silver's lab many, many years ago, but I still remember like it was yesterday. Jerry was always kind, thoughtful, and straightforward. He was supportive of his students, regardless of the direction their lives took. I know he will be missed by his family and friends and that he will be fondly and lovingly remembered.
I am a first cousin of Jerry and we played together a great deal as children as we were almost exactly the same age. I remember listening to the many records he collected up in his 2nd floor house. I think of Jerry and smile because he was so sweet and funny. We talked about what he was working on as we became adults, and I was so amazed at his commitment to finding a path of mobility for persons with spinal
Cord injuries. Jerry knew that I was very interested in his work as I have always worked in the field of disabilities. I recently saw the film about Christopher Reeves and immediately thought of my committed cousin and how he had met and been congratulated by Christopher Reeves. I saw Jerry last summer when my sister and I visited my Aunt Miriam on Mother’s Day. He was with his dear wife and so, so sad about her dealing with a serious form of dementia. He was her main caretaker and she was the love of his life. I will truly miss seeing and learning more about my cousin’s accomplishments and his life!!
Dan and the Silver family, I am so very sorry for your loss. Jerry was such a bright spot in my life. He was a great mentor, and continued to be supportive long after I graduated. His quotes and anecdotes will continue to amuse me. I pray that the love of family and friends comforts you in this time of sadness. His memory and contributions to science will live on.
