Beginning in church choir after college, intensifying a couple of decades later in a barbershop chorus, and reaching its pinnacle for almost three decades in a barbershop quartet, I sang alongside Bob Cochrane -
between rehearsals and performances, from two to five times a week depending on the time of year.
As I am a lifelong non-driver, for our barbershop and quartet years together he was my primary transportation. During our many drives together, I sometimes unburdened myself to Bob in a way I couldn't to anyone else - even family. Bob loved to talk, but was also a good listener. He was an unfailing champion of mine:he believed in me when I didn't, and was always encouraging and supportive.
During the early days of personal computing we went to many hobbyist events together, and often shared meals after barbershop performances. Bob usually ordered the same thing; I almost always tried something different.
I have made few life-long friends; I will miss Bob Cochrane deeply.
